Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join author Dr. Laura Puaca for a discussion of "Women in STEM: Challenging Gender Stereotypes". Laura Micheletti Puaca, author of Searching for Scientific Womanpower: Technocratic Feminism and the Politics of National Security, 1940-1980 , and assistant professor of history at Christopher Newport University, will lead a discussion of past and present “technofeminism”. Her research traces contemporary feminist interest in science to the World War II and Cold War years. Anxiety over America’s supply of scientific brainpower was matched by suspicion about women’s rights. Puaca has detailed the ways in which feminist reformers navigated these concerns to advance women’s education and employment, laying the groundwork for the proliferation of women’s societies in science and feminist reforms in science and society.
